The Necks
They can be revered as the uncrowned kings of improvisationAbout
The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia.
Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms.
Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the eighteen albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again.
The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.
Programme Text
They can be revered as the uncrowned kings of improvisation. For almost 40 years, the Australian trio The Necks have been fathoming the possibilities and beauty of spontaneous musical collaboration. Departing often from just a few notes, The Necks make their constellations flow in infinite variations, signalling each other, exploring what might come next: sometimes together, then against one another,
breaking off into solos, only to find a shared ground again, always curious about what remains open, what has not yet been said or played. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) come to donaufestival with their 19th album. It bears a title that aptly summarises their work to date: Travel.
