El Conde de Torrefiel

La luz de un lago

About

The stage works of El Conde de Torrefiel are characterized by productions where choreography, text, and sound converge to create extraordinary landscapes, visual narratives, and experiences that disturb the perception of time. They reveal tensions between the individual and the collective, materializing on stage in surprising ways.

Their works propose a theater shaped by absences and latent presences, where text and sound play a fundamental role in composing the visual image on stage. Imagination becomes a vehicle to reinvent reality and explore dimensions of fiction that oscillate between the tragic and the playful, the daring and the subtle.

Since its beginnings in 2010 with the play La historia del rey venido por el aburrimiento, El Conde de Torrefiel has created more than twenty theatrical productions, developing a contemporary, profound, and distinctive stage language. Their artistic practice spans multiple formats, from video art to installation and site-specific works. The company also extends its creativity to publishing texts in Spanish and French.

El Conde de Torrefiel has occasionally collaborated with artists from various disciplines, particularly in the field of dance, integrating the perspectives of its directors, Pablo Gisbert and Tanya Beyeler, who contribute as dramaturgs.

The creations of El Conde de Torrefiel have been showcased in theaters and festivals such as the Avignon Theater Festival, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, Théâtre de Vidy-Lausanne, Steirisches Herbst Festival, donaufestival, and Wiener Festwochen in Austria, Festival d’Automne in Paris, Festival de Otoño, Conde Duque Cultural Center, and Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Mercat de les Flors and GREC Festival in Barcelona, La Triennale di Milano, Short Theater in Rome, Vooruit in Ghent, De Singel in Antwerp, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, among others.

Programme text

A wall on the stage, as if waiting for strange projections from the distance or memories from the future: the plot of La luz de un lago is woven from fragments of the lives of characters from different places at different times. This highly evocative work tells a story of love and emptiness, work and violence, oscillating visually between illusions and hallucinations while offering trenchant observations on a society full of contradictions and conflicts. With appearances as textual invocations: a couple who met at a concert in Manchester in the past, two secret lovers in Athens, a trans woman in Paris, and an opera premiere in a future Venice. Scenographic spatial interpretations and suggestive sound elements lure the audience into the vortex of an elusive but all the more fascinating stage creation. A rift cuts through the world – and creates a dream full of realities.
