SOUND

The vocals of Rosa Anschütz float upon tender, smouldering, wistful soundscapes. Last spring the Vienna-based artist released her debut album Rigid. She’s inspired by the traditions of dark wave and postpunk, but uses modular synthesizers to trench deep grooves into their sounds and romantic smoothness. Sometimes small loops of grating, overmodulated guitar feedback set the beat; then a sinister metallic drum rattles away under the abysmal bass. Anschütz sings to it with her cool yet oddly soulful timbre.
