London-based DJ and producer Loraine James draws her inspiration as much from classic soul music as from the latest avant-garde club music. She crafts astonishingly complicated beats from diced sound fragments, which she interweaves with the remnants of shredded vocal melodies: incredibly nervy music that could tear apart at any moment – if it didn’t possess so much inner tension, and if Loraine James’ tracks weren’t suffused with such great compositional power. Her new album Reflection was written during the first lockdown; it contains soundscapes that convey feelings of irreconcilability and despair, although the final track is optimistically, and quite appropriately, called: “We’re Building Something New”.
