Krems Halle 2 Halle 2

Program text

The most intriguing club music sound of late is coming from Uganda, and Kampire is its herald. The Kampala-based DJ fuses oscillating polyrhythms of African tradition with straight and solid techno beats; cheerful rings of percussion, high-life guitars, and reggae vocals are scattered over magnetically buzzing bass. Kampire combines analogue and digital, ornamental and minimal into a beautiful synthesis. In the last years, the Nyege Nyege collective, which she is a member of, has attracted global attention to the scene in East Africa with its same-named festival. Kampire’s parties offer rare safe spaces for the local LGBTQ* community – but at a high risk. Homosexuality is illegal in Uganda, and the number of homophobic attacks is on the rise.
