Program text

Trumpeter Jac Berrocal has ranked amongst the most prominent figures of the French improvisation scene since the 1970s: a gifted eccentric whose inspirations range from chanson to free jazz to kraut rock. In his current trio with the multi-instrumentalist David Fenech and the electronics and percussion wizard Vincent Epplay, Berrocal improvises on top of splintery guitar chords, field recordings, and heavy dub echo loops. On their latest album Exterior Lux, the threesome navigate through nebulous soundscapes. But you also hear almost rock’n’rolly song explosions – in a certain light, Berrocal returns to his musical roots: his very first single was a cover version of Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-a-Lula”.
