The Los Angelesbased transgender personality delights, perturbs, and appals her audience with melodic, extremely catchy songs intoned by a voice of indefinable gender in a high-pitched chipmunk style. In the substrate of this extra bitter-sugary music, the clacking stumble of stiletto-esque beats are at work with uncanny, burrowing bass. What do we feel when our feelings just seem to be inventions? This is the question that SOPHIE’s art poses: What’s left of us when we don’t just give up on ourselves but also the whole concept of self?
