How does pop music sound in the age of posthumanism? This question motivates the art of composer and engineer Moritz Simon Geist. His songs are performed exclusively by robots: Miniature, motorpowered drums hammer the beats out of metal plates; automated thumb pianos vibrate in deep bass frequencies; an 808 robot translates the sounds of the same-named drum machine in choppy body mechanics. In a peculiar way, Geist’s music is extremely precise and extremely fragile at the same time. It conjures the unpredictability of a future in which everything seems to have become predictable.
