Program text

With the group This Heat he redefined post-punk before punk had even broken loose. Since 1976 Charles Hayward and his band have been combining free improvisation with tape experiments, arid guitar riffs and tragic choirs. Hayward played wild and free percussion, while singing for his life. After two epochal albums—This Heat (1978) and Deceit (1981)—the formation split up. Since then, Hayward has been working relentlessly as a solo artist, in bands like Camberwell Now, with intellectual allies such as Bill Laswell and Fred Frith, at the interface of free and structured music, of songwriter art and sonic experiments.
