Water Will (in Melody)

Program text

“The Willful Child” by the Brothers Grimm sticks an arm out of the earth of her grave. This gruesome image from the fairytale is transferred to the stage as a puppet-like motif, becoming part of a slapstick fantasy in black latex and white gloves. Bodies twitch and wince, faces become grimaces. Thematic associations are as fleeting as water coming from above as a spray mist. With her latest performance after Sorrow Swag and the piece minor matter, which was presented in Krems in 2017, choreographer Ligia Lewis (in collaboration with Titilayo Adebayo, Dani Brown, and Susanne Sachsse) concludes her colour-based trilogy BLUE, RED, WHITE. White not only refers to the use of harsh, blinding light but also the “white” genre of the melodrama, which was celebrated in classical Hollywood cinema in elaborate back-and-white contrasts, and here will be subverted and exaggerated at the same time with the help of affectively charged sounds.
