“Shaneera” is a Kuwaiti slang expression for a queer person – it is derived from the wrong pronunciation of the Arabic word “shanee’a”, which means “outrageous, nefarious, hideous, and foul”. Shaneera is also the name of the new album by Kuwait-based artist Fatima Al Qadiri, which she will present at donaufestival. It evokes the beauty and dignity of queer life in the Arab world. In her performances Al Qadiri links the traditional music from the Gulf region – Khaliji – with the latest razorsharp beats from trap and grime.
