Modesty was never their thing: Flotation Toy Warning once said that the project “was a means of documenting human feelings to a degree of realism not thought possible, set to a soundtrack created from previously unknown instruments.” On their 2004 debut they combined bleating sheep, broken music boxes, and distorted harps into a brand of wallowing operetta pop. It took a solid 13 years for the release of the second album, but The Machine That Made Us is just as megalomaniac, oddly psychedelic, and emotionally seizing.
