Breaks, breaks, and more breaks: With the Californian band Deerhoof no rhythmic structure lasts longer than a couple blinks of the eye; nonetheless, it all connects into songs. No instrument plays a straight chord progression, yet the musicians never lose the thread of the dialogue. Guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez’s wild cries orbit the lines set by percussionist Greg Saunier, while the singer and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki strikes up Japanese children’s songs in the mic. Hardcore without phallus, or maybe a truly free free-jazz variant of rock ‘n’ roll.
