Socialised in punk bands and school choirs alike, Nadah El Shazly is known as one of the protagonists of Cairo’s progressive music scene. Her songs are a mix of free improvisation, classical composition, and Oriental sounds. An iridescent combination of Western and local instruments and a dark velvety voice create atmospheres that speak of personal mythologies. El Shazly’s sound constructions reflect the dichotomy between tradition and modern chaos in Egypt’s capital: organic and other-worldly, captivating and wistful.
