Gravetemple is the name of the stomach-quaking drone metal band of Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley, Mayhem singer Attila Csihar, and the multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi. On the 2017 release “Impassable Fear”, after an eight-year pause, O’Malley’s amp-loving doom guitar is hounded through free core passages propelled by thudding percussion, while Csihar timidly grunts like a demented recitation by a shaman of the underworld. In the end we are redeemed – perhaps – by the bells out of this shadow empire between ritual and improvisation.
