Behind MHYSA is the performance artist E Jane – a self-proclaimed “queer black diva and underground popstar for the cyber resistance”. Her sci-fi r’n’b confronts eerie a cappella vocals with an aggressive post-club sound, eccentric ballroom, and hyperaestheticised soul. At the heart of it all is a political message: Give the black queer lady a stage. MHYSA speaks of desires, dreams, and self-alienation. At the same time, her songs bear the promise of a better world and call for self-empowerment.
