Willis Earl Beal calls himself Nobody. His music is about how a somebody turns into a nobody and thus becomes somebody else. It’s music of massive deceleration and endless delay: It lends its sound from gospel and soul, but there is no hereafter, no God, no salvation; it strives towards the light but always falls back into the darkness. At his concerts Nobody masks himself from the world and from the listeners, so he can confront them with all the more menace. He is subject and not-I, reason and urge in one figure: endless transformation.
