AUSTRIAN PREMIERE

“Fight. This is beyond fitness. This is beyond enhancement. Join the rise.” The fitness gurus from Medusa Bionic Rise (MBR) see themselves as prototypes of a cutting-edge model of new humans. One can also see MBR as a flashy parody of a missionary cult with a penchant for futuristic manifestos about sculpted bodies, preaching the values of transhumanist self-optimisation to the world. Here, a handicap is only another incentive to work harder on yourself; a seductive, muscular, when not queerly shimmering surface should entrap our desires, the sweat from box training triggers the lust to release aggression. Founded in 2015, The Agency says they work with “the manifestations and narratives of neoliberalism and stretch these formats through over-affirmation”. Their performative installation Medusa Bionic Rise is set in a charmingly charmless fitness studio hypersimulation including a designer drug counter. Backstage in the more intimate rooms one-on-one therapy is offered to volunteers from the audience.
